SEO, AEO and GEO Explained: What Modern Content Writers Must Know

01SEO is still the base layer

Search Engine Optimization remains the discipline of matching content to what people type into Google. The core has not changed: understand search intent, choose a primary keyword, structure the article clearly, and write the most useful answer on the internet for that query.

Writers do not need to become technical SEOs. You need intent research, sensible headings, natural keyword use and clean formatting.

02AEO: write for direct answers

Answer Engine Optimization is about structuring content so that search features — featured snippets, voice answers, AI Overviews — can lift a direct answer from your page.

The practical rule: when a section answers a question, put a one-to-three sentence direct answer immediately after the heading, then expand. Question-led headings plus concise answers are the whole game.

  • Use question-led H2/H3 headings where they match real queries
  • Answer directly in 1–3 sentences before expanding
  • Use tables for comparisons and numbered steps for processes

03GEO: be credible enough to cite

Generative Engine Optimization is the newest layer: making your content the kind AI assistants trust and reference. AI systems favour clear, specific, evidence-led writing from consistent sources.

For writers this means: state facts precisely, cite primary sources, keep dates current, and develop a recognisable area of expertise. Generic content is invisible to both Google and AI assistants.

04What this means for your career

Clients increasingly ask for 'SEO writers' and mean all three layers. A writer who can explain the difference — and demonstrate it in a sample — immediately stands out in proposals.

Our course ebook dedicates a full level to each of SEO, AEO and GEO, with annotated before/after examples so you can see the techniques applied to real paragraphs.
